Inspired by the world of climbing
As part of the refurbishment of the bistro at the O'BLOC climbing and bouldering centre, a lighting scheme was developed through a small number of carefully considered interventions, bringing together orientation, functionality and atmosphere. Warm, zoned lighting guides visitors from the entrance into the hall and draws the eye towards the reception counter as the central point of arrival.
The defining design feature is a series of bespoke pendant luminaires whose faceted forms evoke rock crystals. Running the full length of the counter, they create a recurring motif and establish a direct connection to climbing. Their suspension system also draws on this visual language: inspired by the anchor points of a via ferrata, eyelets formed from reinforcing steel support the pendants, with the cables threaded through them like climbing ropes.
The lampshades were 3D-printed using recycled filament. Their warm tones create an inviting atmosphere and encourage visitors to linger. Flexible track-mounted spotlights use narrow beams to accentuate seating areas and planted walls. Illuminating the vertical surfaces keeps the space feeling bright and open throughout the depth of the bistro.
The result is an adaptable lighting design that meets the operational requirements and gives the bistro a distinct identity within the climbing centre.
